THE DIARY 14: PROPHET WALKER – With a Treehouse On Top!

The name Prophet stuck with me, and so did he.

I am eternally grateful to some incredible community leaders in Watts/Jordan Downs in South Los Angeles who kept telling me ‘You have to meet Prophet Walker, he loves design!’

Over the past 10 years I have come to know Prophet, a man with a huge heart and tireless commitment to building better community – drawing from his lived experience to make the world a better place through the power of connection. Turning lemons into lemonade or using the metaphor of a treehouse to reimagine communal living – both are now part of the fabric of Prophet Walker’s journey and legacy. Treehouse continues to spread its branches into new neighborhoods, propelling new communities and making the world a better place for others.

THE DIARY 12: The Beauty of Aging

Suddenly, older icons are everywhere. Shortly before dying at 87, writer Joan Didion posed in dark sunglasses for Celine. (The sunglasses sold later in auction for $27,000). Legendary model Carmen Dell’Orefice, who started her career at 15 in 1945, just appeared on the April cover of Vogue Czechoslovakia, photographed by Albert Watson. She is now 91. A few weeks ago Saint Laurent launched a new campaign- “Director’s cut”- with four famous film directors-Abel Ferrara, David Cronenberg, Jim Jarmusch, and Pedro Almodovar-, all in their seventies and eighties, as models of cool and style.

We are living longer and better - and culture is taking notice.
